Co-Op, Ashington, Northumberland

We are pleased to be the principle contractor for a new Co-Op food store, located in Ashington.  Working with Silverstone Building Consultancy Limited, we have fabricated and erected a building to the Co-Op’s specifications.

The site was previously a caravan storage yard, which was over grown and generally considered to be scrub land. In order to begin work planning was granted for change of use, and the site was fenced off in order to make it secure.

The land was scrapped back and covered in a layer of hardcore. This gives a solid, clean work work area to begin our build.

Once marked out, the foundations were dug to the correct size, reinforced with mesh and filled with concrete. Holding down bolts to support the stanchions were set within the concrete.

Whilst this was happening on site, our fabrication team, based in Amble, took the raw material and created a building measuring 21.375m long x 15.778m wide x 3.850m average height to eaves.  Each stanchion, rafter and hunch has been made to measure so that it can be bolted together on site with easy. Each steel part has been shot blasted and painted with a coat of zinc phosphate primer.

Once the steel work was erected, we laid a concrete floor and began the brickwork to the side and rear elevations. Within the concrete floor slab, drainage was installed to accommodate toilets, and services.

The roof structure has been clad using Kingspan composite panels, with a Streamline gutter system fitted.

To the front elevation, we have installed aluminum framed glazing, with an automatic sliding entrance door, and a panel for an ATM.

External works have extend to a tarmac car park, paving stabs to the front, secure yard area and landscaping.

The photographs show the development taking form and progress over the duration of the build.
